Benue State Amnesty Programme Gains UN Recognition (See Why)

The efforts of Benue Government at ensuring peace in the state and its neighbours through the amnesty programme has won the recognition of the United Nations, UN.
Governor Ortom has consequently been invited to deliver a keynote address during the 6th Biennial Meetings of States – BMS6 organised by the UN, scheduled to hold between the 6th – 10th of June this year in New York, United States of America.
The event is UN’s ‘Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade of Small Arms and Light Weapons in all Aspects’ which is also aimed at considering the national, regional and global implementation of the roadmap to peace.
The Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PRESCOM), in a letter to Governor Samuel Ortom on the 6th Biennial Meetings of the UN, said the amnesty programme of the state initiated by the present administration has been adopted as a model in Africa and other parts of the world for ending conflicts through peaceful disarmament.
The letter added that during the New York event, efforts to attract additional international partnership/funding for the implementation of PRESCOM’s intervention in Benue State will also be in focus.
It will be recalled that early into his tenure,  Governor Ortom initiated an amnesty programme through which more than 700 ex-criminals have enrolled and hundreds of assorted weapons recovered.
